Cambridge Biostability has invested £1m in the world’s first commercial sterile spray dryer designed and built specifically to make injectable stable suspension vaccines and drugs.
The facility will accelerate the time to market of stable vaccines by providing a precursor for further large-scale production.

Biostability has utilised the well established industrial process of spray drying to gently dry vaccines into stable, soluble glass microspheres. These are then suspended in inert anhydrous liquids, in which they never dissolve, to produce instantly injectable stable suspensions.
In the past few years Biostability has worked exclusively with commercial spray dryers in the AEG Niro scalable range to develop the stable liquid technology. The SD Micro, shown here gives results that can be transferred directly to larger machines in the range such as the ASD 1 for the next phase of GMP scale-up.

Thermo-stable liquid vaccines are the future for vaccine delivery worldwide. They need no refrigeration or preparation before injection and they do not need to be re-constituted. They can be stored at high temperature for years before use. Importantly they are undamaged by accidental freezing during shipment or storage. In many vaccination outreach programmes over 70% of standard vaccines are destroyed by freezing. Biostability’s vaccines can be delivered to those who need them, quickly, safely and easily, without problems.
Cambridge Biostability is working together with a number of partners to produce technologies which meet the world's need to have much safer, more robust methods of supplying drugs and vaccines to everyone.
Initially this has been in the creation of a revolutionary technology which allows vaccines to be stabilised and removes the requirement for complicated cold storage and delivery methods. This technology is not a dream for the future but a reality today.
Using these methods, Cambridge Biostability have also managed to stabilise a number of biological drugs. Importantly they have developed a method to stabilise insulin, which may lead to a more convenient method for diabetes sufferers to manage their condition.
